- Story Text: Leaders of the Christian Democratic Party and the Christian Social Party opened campaigning for West Germany's forthcoming Bundestag election with a combined rally in a traditional beer hall in West Berlin in Monday night (2 Oct).
Under the Four Power agreement, West Berliners are not allowed to vote in the election.
But the reason for opening the campaign there was given by Rainer Barzel, leader of the Christian Democratic Party. He said the CDU and CSU wanted to start a new policy from Berlin as the capital of the German nation.
The Bubdestag election became necessary when the left-Liberal coalition of Herr Willy Brandt was defeated in Parliament last month. Herr Brandt, whose government had commanded no effective majority for the last five months, tabled a motion of confidence which it knew it could not win. Then Herr Brandt called on the President, Dr Gustav Heinemann, to recommend that the Bundestag be dissolved 12 months short of its full term of four years. He did so, and the election will be held on November 19.
