- Story Text: Following the damage to the United States embassy building during student demonstrations in April, four members of the Greek Communist Party appeared before an Athens court on Saturday evening (11 October) accused of having attacked the embassy and damaging the building.
The accused included a woman architect, Anna Filinis, and a journalist, Panayiotis Stangos. The United States Embassy is claiming three million drachmae (2,100,000 sterling approximately) damages. During the demonstration in April, thousands of young protesters marched from the Athens Polytechnic to the Embassy, to mark the anniversary of 1967 coup which resulted in seven years of military dictatorship. Molotov cocktails were hurled into the Embassy, and police had to use tear gas to break up the demonstration.
When the four accused were due to appear before the Court on Saturday, the Communist Party held a mass rally out side Athens University protesting at their arrest. The demonstrators carried placards saying "Keep your hands off Greek patriots", and "Pay nothing to the Americans".
Demonstrations directly outside the court were banned, and the courthouse was surrounded by a large contingent of police. The University was the nearest appropriate building to the court for the demonstration to be held. It lies only two streets from the courthouse.
