  • Story Text: More than sixty veteran and vintage vehicles passed through the Belgian port of Ostend on Sunday (January 7) on their way to Brussels from London on a rally celebrating British entry to the European Common Market.

    The "Veteran and Vintage Drive into Europe" was one of a series of events in Britain's "Fanfare for Europe" celebrations. The vehicles in the rally, some dating form the 1890's, included cars, double decker buses, motor-cycles and a steam-driven lorry.

    After reaching Ostend by Channel Ferry, the vehicles arrived in Brussels the same night. However, heavy fog around the Common Market capital forced some of the vehicles to make their entry to the city on the back of trailers
    SYNOPSIS: More than sixty old cars passed through the Belgian port of Ostend on Sunday on their way to Brussels from London. They were taking part in a veteran and vintage car rally...one of a series of events to celebrate British entry to the European Common Market. Some of the vehicles date from the 1890's.

    The old vehicles arrived in Ostend by cross Channel Ferry, motored through Ghent and arrived in Brussels, the Common Market capital, on Sunday night. But failing light and fog forced some of the older vehicles to make the final stages of the run on the backs of trailers. Their headlamps couldn't cope.
