- Story Text: The Caltex Rally, the final round of the East African Championship Rally for 1973, was run on Saturday and Sunday (24 & 25 November) over a tough 100 kilometre (625 mile) route around Kenya.
The field of seventy cars, a record entry for the Caltex Rally, was the highest entry ever received for a Kenya Championship event. The start, finish, and control headquarters for the Rally were located at a major Nairobi hotel.
The rally began at 2 p.m. on Saturday with the Police Commissioner, Mr. Bernard Hinga, flagging off the first few competitors in his capacity as head of the East African Motor Sports Club, which staged the event.
The record entry was made up largely of comparative newcomers to rallying, with experienced competitors spread evenly through the field.
The provisional winners were among the favourites for the event -- Davinder Singh and Roger Barnard in a Japanese Colt Gallant.
