- Story Text: INTRO: Around 50,000 supporters of Bosnian President Izetbegovic's nationalist party gathered in Sarajevo on Thursday to hear their hero address his final campaign rally before Saturday's elections.
____________________________________________________________________ Thousands of supporters of Bosnia's ruling Moslem Party of Democratic Action (SDA) converged on Sarajevo's sports stadium on Thursday (September 12), the final day of campaigning before Saturday's election.
The stadium was awash with green and white SDA flags and nationalistic fervour as the crowd sang and chanted while waiting for the arrival of Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic. All was in stark contrast to the wishes of the international community, who saw the elections as a chance to unite a country bitterly divided after almost four years of fighting.
Critics say the poll, coming so soon after the bitter war, risks legitimising a "de facto" partition of Bosnia along ethnic lines.
The Western allies, whose armies are policing the peace accords, insist they must go ahead if common institutions foreseen by Dayton to reunite the country are to be created.
