- Story Text: Some twenty-thousand supporters of the Moslem militant Hamas group gathered at a rally in Gaza on Friday, (January 12) one week after the killing of Hamas "hero" Yahya Ayyash.
Waving banners bearing green and red Palestinan flags and the face of Ayyash, and shouting anti-Israeli slogans, Hamas members protested at Yarmouk stadium in Gaza City to commemorate the killing of their master bombmaker last Friday (January 5) Ayyash, nicknamed "the Engineer", was believed to have masterminded a bombing campaign that killed nearly 80 people in Israel. Ayyash was blown up by a booby-trapped cellular phone in his hideout in Gaza.
Widepsread speculation among both Israelis and Palestinians places Israel's internal special security forces behind his death.
Hamas members oppose peace between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation and have vowed to resort to suicide bombings to stop the peace process between the two sides.
At Yarmouk stadium, a podium was decorated with a 10 meter (yard) long drawing of Ayyash, complete with the "Engineer" toting a gun and holding a cellular phone to his ear.
