- Story Text: Nigerian opposition leader Gani Fawehinmi has collapsed at an anti-military protest in Lagos and has been taken away by police, according to colleagues.
Gani was apparently overcome by the teargas and fell down before police took him away on Friday (June 12).
At the 200 strong demonstration police fired in the air and used teargas at the Yaba Bus Stop market area of Nigeria's biggest city of Lagos.
Fawehinmi's Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON) has led calls for street demonstrations against the four-day old regime of military ruler General Abdulsalam Abubakar.Their decision came after Abubakar promised to continue the discredited democracy plan of his predecessor General Sani Abacha who died on Monday (June 8).
Friday marks the fifth anniversary of 1993 elections whose annulment plunged Africa's most populous nation into the crisis from which it has yet to recover.
Opposition centres on Lagos and southwestern Nigeria, home region of Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 poll who was locked up in 1994 for declaring himself president in defiance of Abacha.
