  • Story Text: A mass rally by the Popular Youth Movement of the Revolution marked President Mobutu Sese Seko's 45th birthday in Kinshasa, Zaire, on Wednesday (15 October).

    President Mobutu was, naturally, a guest of honour at the rally and received several birthday presents from the various groups that make up the Youth Movement.

    The Movement was created in 1965 and has a good deal of political influence.

    President Mobutu watched parades by the Pioneer Youth, Labour Youth, Agricultural Youth, the Craft Brigade, the Disciplinary Brigade and the Guide Group for Civil, Cultural and Foreign Affairs study.

    During the rally new programme for the Youth Movement was announced. It contains three major points: to reinforce and intensify ideological education; to ensure the participation of youth in the "vast programme of social and economic re-structuring being undertaken by the Zaire Government" and to intensify activities of vigilance by youthful members in the battle "against all mental alienation activities".

    During the course of this year, over 500 new youth groups have been founded in regions throughout Zaire, and amongst students studying abroad.

    Wednesday's rally lasted for four hours and culminated with the showing of documentaries and historical films.
