- Story Text: Thousands of people attended a peace rally in Karachi on Saturday (December 3), a day after three people died in a rash of politically-related violence.
On Friday, (December 2) gunmen fired upon the Karachi home of Pakistani Labour Minister Ghulam Akbar Lasi, police said. Lasi was not at home at the time, but a police guard, a driver and a passerby were killed. One person was wounded.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack, which was the second in a week against members of the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in Karachi.
Three PPP members and a policeman were shot dead last Saturday (November 26) in a Karachi district where the ethnic-based Mohajir National Movement (MQM) has strong support.
The MQM, which claims to be fighting for the rights of the city's majority Mohajir community, has been waging a bitter struggle with security forces and a splinter faction, the MQM (Haqiqi).
More than 12 people have been killed in Karachi since Wednesday (November 30) when army troops ended a security operation and were replaced by police and paramilitary rangers.
During Saturday's rally, marchers held banners calling for peace and an end to violence in Karachi.
