  • Story Text: A new political force is emerging in Uruguay. Launched last February, the Frente Amplio or Broad Front, is designed along the lines of Chile's Popular Unity coalition which brought President Allende to power last year. Supporters of the Frente Amplio are hoping it will perform the same service for its presidential candidate in the November election, General Liber Seregni.

    One of the strongholds of the new party's support is likely to be Montevideo. General Seregni was campaigning there on Wednesday (August 25) -- and was drawing considerable support from the city's textile workers, who have been on strike for the past month. It is widely expected that the new party will capture control of Montevideo City Council in the elections. And with national discontent fermented by severe deflation, Tupamaros activities and high unemployment, General Seregni is expected to given the traditional Blanco and Colorado parties a close fight in the presidential election.
