  • Story Text: Supporters of the Protestant extremist group, the Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF) staged a rally in Belfast on Saturday (September 3) in memory of Ulster Volunteer Forces (UVF) member Brian Robinson, shot dead by an undercover soldier several years ago.

    The Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was investigating reports that UVF gunmen attended the loyalist rally in the Shankill Road and fired volleys of shots.

    Several hundred people took part in the rally, which was watched by many more.

    Witnesses at the scene reported that two hooded men appeared before the crowds and fired the shots while a third announced the UVF was happy to accept the "IRA surrender".

    Britain and Ireland have united to urge gunmen of outlawed Protestant militant groups in Northern Ireland to follow the IRA in declaring a ceasefire to a conflict which has cost more than 3,000 lives.

    Sources close to the UVF and the UFF have confirmed they were discussing the possibility of a ceasefire.
