  • Story Text: About 25,000 people attended a rally in New Delhi on Sunday (22 June) to hear the leaders of mainly Right-wing Opposition parties demand the resignation from office of Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi in the wake of her recent court conviction for electoral malpractice.

    The main speaker was Mr. Raj Narain, leader of the Indian People's Party, who brought the initial charges of election malpractice against Mrs. Gandhi.

    The rally came a day before Mrs. Gandhi filed a Supreme Court appeal against her disqualification from public office for six years. She was to also seek an "absolute and unconditional" stay order against the consequences of the Allahabad High Court verdict. A limited stay order could prevent her from taking her seat in Parliament but would leave her free to continue as head of government.

    A counter affidavit has been filed by Mr. Narain strongly objecting to a stay order. His petition labelled Mrs. Gandhi's plea of indispensability as "repugnant".

    Former deputy-Prime Minister Morarji Desai--sacked by Mrs. Gandhi in 1969--told Sunday's mass rally that the Opposition fight to secure her resignation from office would go on across the country regardless of the legal wrangles.

    Among other leaders who addressed the rally was Mr. Asoka Mehta of the breakaway Congress party, now with the Opposition.
