- Story Text: Presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko attends
rally in Kiev.
With just a week to go to the re-run of Ukraine's
scandal-ridden presidential run-off, opposition candidate
Viktor Yushchenko and his rival, Prime Minister Viktor
Yanukovich turned to heavenly forces for support in their
campaigns.
Several thousand enthusiastic Yushchenko supporters
waving trademark orange flags and chanting "Yushchenko"
gathered in central Kiev on Sunday (December 19) to mark St
Nicholas' Day - one of the most revered local holidays
marking the start of the Christmas celebrations.
"I want to tell you on this day that I believe that
Viktor Andreevich Yushchenko will become Ukrainian
president," a bearded St Nicholas dressed in lavish
Orthodox church dress shouted into the crowd.
Yushchenko told the crowd he welcomed the prediction.
"In the next few days we will indeed have a new
president. St Nicholas knows it all. That's why he made
this prophesy. I am also sure that we also have new, free
and democratic Ukraine with free, honest and well-off
people. Good harmony and love to you. Glory to each of you!
Glory to Ukraine and glory to Jesus Christ!" Yushchenko
told his supporters.
