- Story Text: The Hungarian far-right has rallied against capitalism.
Hungary's far-right Justice and Life Party (MIEP) -
seen as a potential power broker after next months general election,
railed against the forces of capitalism at a mass rally on
Friday (March 15).
The party president, Istvan Csurka told at least 50,000
people on the country's national day, the anniversary of the
failed 1848 anti-Hapsburg revolt, that nobody can force
Hungarians to adopt capitalism and that the Hungarian future
could go two ways -- they either survive or they melt into
something frighteningly alien.
Maverick playwright Csurka, best known for his
anti-semitic and national remarks, said the forces of global
capitalism would reduce Hungarians to second-class citizens in
their own country.
Three weeks ahead of general elections scheduled for April
7 and 21, the party's 176 candidates took an oath at the rally
promising to serve the rebirth of Hungary if elected.
Recent polls show a swing in favour of the ruling
centre-right Fidesz and that the Justice and Life party may
not reach the five percent vote it needs to make it to
parliament.
The Justice and Life party offered to withdraw over 100
candidates in the second round to help the ruling-right Fidesz
party and block a leftist government.
Analysts have warned that any election pact between Fidesz
and the Justice and Life party would damage Hungary's bid to
join the European Union and unnerve financial markets.
