- Story Text: Large rally in Paris to push for a No vote in the
up-coming EU referendum.
The largest gathering so far in favour of a "No"
vote for the constitutional treaty on the May 29 referendum
was held in Paris on Saturday (May 21, 2005).
Activists and sympathisers from various organisations and
political parties attended the event, which was held at
Republique square from early afternoon and was scheduled to
continue into the evening. Some 15,000 were expected to
attend.
The Socialist Party - which is deeply divided between
those in favour and those against the treaty - the
Communist Party and the antiglobalisation organisation
Attac were among the most visible and vocal against the
constitution.
Jose Bove, the most well known French antiglobalisation
activist, addressed the crowd with a strong message of
rejection.
"To reject the constitutional treaty means to give hope
to the European people. If we vote no, we will not be
trapped for 50 years into a constitution that supports
liberal economic and financial laws and which will create a
situation that can only get worse for everybody and generate
delocalisations and joblessness, a totally
unbearable situation", he said and added that a shorter
treaty should be written in the next 4 years.
The French referendum will be held on May 29. Various
polls have repeatedly indicated that a rejection of the
treaty is still the most likely outcome.
