- Story Text: In Washington, D.C., demonstrators and British
Member of Parliament, George Galloway, braved pouring rain to
protest the continuing United Nations sanctions against Iraq.
A planned day of protest on Sunday (August 6) was
thwarted by the weather. But folk singer Pete Seeger was not
deterred from singing to those who had decided to face the
heavy rain. The 81-year-old peace activist has been singing
songs of peace and freedom since the 1940s.
British Labor politician George Galloway said he had
travelled to Iraq and had witnessed the coffins of young
children strapped to cars, while they were mourned by their
mothers. "I have to tell you the curse on their lips is your
country and mine. Because this is being done by our
governments, using our taxes, our aeroplanes; our servicemen
and women are committing this crime and nobody else in the
world can stop it except us," he told the audience. Galloway
has been a vocal opponent of the sanctions on Iraq and has
served as the senior vice chairman of the Labour party foreign
affairs committee since he was elected to Parliament in 1987.
The mass rally in Lafayette Square, opposite the White
House, was just one of many events organized for the weekend
by a coalition of over 90 national organisations. They say
that the sanctions against Iraq have not only cliamed the
lives of hundreds of thousands of children, but have also kept
Iraq's basic infrastructure in disrepair, while shortages of
food and medicine have led to widespread malnutrition and
disease.
Iraq vowed to defeat United Nations sanctions that
entered their 11th year on Sunday
