- Story Text: Dakar 2003 will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a
route crossing five countries from France to Egypt via Spain,
Tunisia and Libya.
The 2003 edition of the Dakar, the most famous
cross-crountry rally in the world, will start on January 1 in
Marseille, southeastern France, with a night prologue and will
end on January 19 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Four hundred and forty competitors --155 motorbikes, 125
cars, 45 trucks and 115 assistance vehicles-- will participate
in this new edition which will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Competitors including professional drivers, stars, top
level athletes but also amateurs, will have to cross five
countries including Spain, Tunisia, Lybia and Egypt with a
finish at the Sinai Point.
For its 25th anniversary, the Dakar will be exceptional
and original with spectacular landscapes, said Hubert Auriol,
director of the Dakar Rally.
In total, competitors will have to cover 8,552 kilometres
of which 3,306 kms of liaison and 5,216 km of special. From
Tunis to Sharm El Sheikh, the route will include a wide range
of tracks as well as desert stages on a wide variety of
terrain.
Finland's Ari Vatanan, a former world rally champion, will
make his comeback in the race which he will be trying to win
for the fifth time. He won the Paris-Dakar rally in 1987,
1989, 1990 and 1991.
