- Story Text: Several thousand Chechens, mostly women and elderly
men, held a rally in the nearly destroyed capital Grozny,
demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya and
protesting against the constant arrest of Chechen men by
Russian federal forces.
The protesters marched through the centre of Grozny on
Saturday (April 7) calling for Russian troops to withdraw from
Chechnya and for the presidents of Russia and Chechnya to hold
talks.
An old man said: "We are not bandits, Russia is the bandit.
We did not attack Russia, Russia attacked us. It's not our
fault, it's theirs. Everyone starting from Putin should be
kicked out of the Kremlin!"
The protesters held up photographs of Chechens killed in
fighting with Russian forces, and accused the Russians of
genocide. An elderly woman said the Russians were holding
Chechens in captivity underground and called for them to be
released.
Russian troops drove past the demonstration in military
vehicles but did not intervene.
