  • Story Text: Kenya celebrated its 13th anniversary of self government on Tuesday (1 June) with a massive military parade and public rally through the streets of Nairobi.

    The day, Madaraka Day, was celebrated throughout the country and at Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad. It marks the day that Kenya attained self rule from Great Britain.

    President Kenyatta addressed the nation on radio and television before viewing the colourful parade. Represented in the march past were the Kenyan armed forces, police, prisons, national youth service, city council and several civilian organisations. These were followed by a Kenya Air Force fly-past and national and traditional dances.

    SYNOPSIS: In Kenya, President Kenyatta, leads the chant to celebrate Madaraka Day, marking 13 years of statehood.

    President Kenyatta took the salute at the parade, which marked the day 13 years ago that British rule in Kenya came to an end. The country was granted full sovereignty in December, 1963, when Mr. Kenyatta's administration assumed responsibility for Kenya's defence and foreign affairs.

    Before the parade, President Kenyatta addressed the nation on radio and television. This year combat troops, displaying sophisticated fighting equipment formed the major part of the display.

    Also represented in the march past were the Kenyan police, prisons, national youth service, city council and several civilian organisations. The day was also celebrated at all Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad.

    President Kenyatta said Madaraka Day, proved that Kenyans could govern themselves and run their own affairs as a free nation of free people.
