  • Story Text: INTRODUCTION Thousands of supporters of the Spanish Communist leader, Senor Santiago Carrillo attended a rally in Madrid on Thursday night (30 December). Earlier in the day Senor Carrillo and seven other leading Communists were released from jail, in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

    SYNOPSIS: The leaders had been held for eight days in Madrid's top security Carabanchel prison on a charge of illegal association. Their release forestalled further violent demonstrations which wrecked Madrid during Senor Carrillo's detention. The Spanish government also approved a royal decree suppressing the courts of public order set up by General Franco to try political offences. In future crimes classed as terrorist will be handled by ordinary courts.

    Senor Carrillo was barred from holding a news conference, but his son, Andrea Carrillo, addressed Thursday night's rally in Rome. He thanked the Communists for the release of his father and praised the continuing support from Communists everywhere.

    Observers quoted by Reuters news agency say Senor Carrillo's release has restored credibility in Spain and abroad to the Government's avowed democratic intentions. The Communists told reporters their release was a victory for democracy and working class movements and the first step towards the legalisation of the party in Spain.
