  • Story Text: The northern Adriatic port of Koper was the scene of a mass rally by Yugoslav nationals on Tuesday (26 March) in protest against the Italian Government's stand on a disputed border area.

    The disputed area is the former free territory of Trieste -- the only unresolved frontier between a Western European country and the Communist countries of Eastern Europe. Under an agreement in 1954, the territory was divided. Zone B was placed under Yugoslav administration while Zone A, including the town of Trieste, was placed under Italian administration.

    The dispute was revived earlier this month when the Italian Government sent a note to the Yugoslav Government protesting against border signs being erected in Zone B.

    About 20,000 Yugoslavs gathered for Tuesday's rally, and called for the Zone to be declared Yugoslav territory.

    A few days before the mass rally, Yugoslav troops and tanks, as well as military chiefs arrived in Koper and took up positions near the border.

    The revived border dispute has clouded relations between the two countries which had improved considerably in the twenty years since the two Zones were established.
