- Story Text: Britain's motor rally drivers have been driven indoors by the Government ban on their sport during the energy crisis.
They have invented a National Indoor Rally Championship to console them and keep in practice during the lean months when they are forbidden from hurling their cars at speed along twisting mountain roads.
For t???lo new rally, on paper, the cars stay parked outside -- with engines switched off.
This rally is conducted entirely on paper with route cards, navigation questions, and problems posed for both drivers and navigators. "We are organising the Championship to try to give rally enthusiasts something to do during the energy crisis", say the organisers the ford Rallye Sport Club.
More than 15,000 British rally fans have entered to test their map reading ability and resourcefulness. You don't even have to have a driving licence to enter. The national area finals will be held in April. The champion indoor driver and the top indoor navigator will be awarded free trips to Finland -- the country that has become the Mecca of modern rallying.
