- Story Text: Around 30 anti-nuclear protesters rallied on Friday (March 23) as nuclear energy industry leaders met ahead of the upcoming nuclear security summit in Seoul.
Dozens of protesters from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand gathered near the nuclear security summit venue in downtown Seoul to denounce the gathering of the nuclear energy industry leaders ahead of the summit, saying the nuclear energy is threatening the safety of their life.
"The nuclear energy industry told us the industry is safe, but actually, there have been many accidents that happened. We think those accidents will be repeated in the future. Therefore, we insist the nuclear energy industry should disappear," said Lee Heonseok, a protester.
Earlier in the day, about 200 corporate leaders and energy experts kicked off a two-day meeting in Seoul to discuss nuclear energy issues as well as atomic safety and security.
South Korean Prime Minister Kim Kwang-sik called for the international community to work together.
"The world's nuclear energy industry should strengthen its international cooperation. It's impossible that the nuclear security and nuclear energy safety issue can be guaranteed by a certain country or corporation," he said.
The results of the nuclear industry's meeting will be passed to the nuclear summit, held on March 26 and 27.
Ahead of the nuclear summit, representatives from South Korea and the United States, which held the first summit, held preparatory meetings, called sherpas, ahead of the massive gathering of leaders around the world.
