  • Story Text: The 3000-strong Chad expatriates in Khartoum stated a rally on Friday (10 February) to celebrate the reconciliation in Chad between the Government and the opposition, the Chad National Liberation Front, (FROLINAT). Among the celebrants were Sudan's President Jaafar Nimeiri and senior Government officials, who pledged their support for Chad in her conflict with neighbouring Libya.

    SYNOPSIS: Mohamed Wasr, the leader of the Chad community in Khartoum, addressed the big crowd of chanting Chad citizens outside the Union building in the Sudanese capital. He told them to be thankful the Government and FROLINAT in Chad had settled their differences, and had decided to try to unite, putting past controversies behind them.

    The jubilant crowd reacted enthusiastically to Mr. Wasr's speech, chanting, singing and waving banners and flags.

    The Sudanese Government was represented by President Nimeiri, his Vice President Abuelgasim Ibrahim and other senior officials. The formal speech was left to Vice President Abuelgasim Ibrahim. He urged the Chad citizens to unite and stand firm as one single nations in Africa. Reuters News Agency reports that Mr. Ibrahim had just returned from a peace-speaking visit to Libya.

    What they were cheering was the recent news that Chad's Head of State, General Felix Malloum, had announced the signing of a ceasefire treaty aimed at setting up a 'national unity' coalition within two months.
