An estimated 10,000 supporters of the exiled former president Ferdinand Marcos gathered in Manila on April 27 to demand hi return and to hear a broadcast message from him. In his address, the ex-president told loyalist that he would one day return and they should mobilized for a mass rally on May 1. The speech, which was transmitted by radio from Hawaii and relayed by loudspeaker at a central park, was also listened to by 75-year-old Arturo Tolentino, Marcos' vice-presidential running-mate in the elections earlier this year. The ex-president,w hose 20-year-rule ended with a civilian-backed military revolt on February 25, urged supporters not to use force against his successor Corazon Aquino. Marcos said he would not have left the presidential palace if she had known he would be flown to Hawaii. He said he had planned to go to his home province of Ilocos Norte. His wife Imelda appeared on the same programme and said life in exile was cruel. Loyalist, many of them waving Marcos portraits and anti-aquino banners, wept as Imelda said she hoped and prayed that she and her husband would come back soon. During the rally, a suspected Aquino supporter was seized in the crowd and hastily taken away. In a speech to the loyalists, Tolentino pledge to fight for the constitution and the restoration of Democracy.
