- Story Text: Experts will assess whether families can return to their homes after a boulder crushes a house and kills a man and his daughter.
A family of four was crushed in southern Germany on Monday night (January 25) by a boulder which broke off the side of a mountain and collapsed a house. The mother and teenage son were rescued alive in the night, earlier the father and daughter were found dead.
About 200 rescue experts spent all evening sifting through the rubble of the completely destroyed house. The body of the father was found first and then the daughter, but quickly thereafter the rescue teams made contact with the mother and the son. Rescuers were able to dig them out of the rubble alive. Both of them were taken to a nearby hospital where they were then treated.
Experts will examine the area on Tuesday (January 26) to assess whether it is safe for the neighbours to return to their homes.
Officials were not able to explain what caused the boulder to break off from the side of the mountain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
