- Story Text: Six people were believed dead on Friday (July 2) when a five-storey residential building collapsed in Cairo's Shubra neighbourhood.
Rescue workers pulled out seven survivors, four of whom were injured, and at least six people were unaccounted for. Workers were carrying out repairs on the first floor at the time the building collapsed.
Two of the workers are among the six people still unaccounted for and believed trapped under the rubble.
Building collapses are common in Egypt because of lax building standards and poor maintenance.
One eyewitness described what what he heard.
"I parked my car here and I went to my shop which is located here, as I do every day. Suddenly, after thirty minutes I heard the loud sound of the collapse and I found it like you see it now," said Mamdouh Samih.
Another eye witness, Atiat Kamel, lives in the house opposite the collapsed building.
"We saw sand falling down and in less than a minute the building had totally collapsed - it collapsed within seconds."
It is the third building to collapse in Shubra city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
