- Story Text: A four-storey under-construction building collapsed in Pakistan's commercial city of Karachi on Tuesday (July 21), killing at least three people and wounding five others, rescue and munispalty officials said.
The building, situated at a low-income and densely-populated neighbouhood of Liaquatabad in the central district of city, collapsed in the late hours of the day. Rescue efforts continued through the night into the early hours of Wednesday (July 22).
Rescue workers pulled out three bodies and five wounded people out of the rubble. More people were feared trapped under the debris.
"This is a rescue operation. We are trying to pull the bodies out carefully as someone might be alive under the rubble,"said municipalty official Masood Alam.
The bodies and injured were moved to two government hospitals.
The cause of the collapse was not known but a witness said the building contractor was wanrned time and again for using substandard building material. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
