- Story Text: The death toll from a collapsed apartment block in eastern Belgium rose to nine on Thursday (January 28) and was expected to increase when the stalled search resumed in the afternoon.
Aerial views of the site showed a pile of rubble and damaged buildings all around.
The street was located in Liege historic city centre, just behind the city's town hall.
A suspected gas leak blew up the block of flats early on Wednesday (January 27) in a street in the centre of the east Belgian city of Liege, damaging adjoining buildings and shattering windows.
Firefighters suspended rescue efforts because of fears that other buildings could also collapse but the search resumed in the afternoon after neighbouring structures were reinforced, although there was little hope of finding anyone alive.
The collapse injured 21 people, three of them seriously. One girl was pulled out alive from the rubble early on Wednesday afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
