- Story Text: About 120 people were injured when a stadium stand collapsed at a youth sporting event in Lima on Friday (February 18).
The accident occurred at the Monumental stadium in Peru's capital, where one of the auxiliary fields outside the main 80,000-seater stadium was being used for the inauguration of the "Future Cream Cup," a juvenile off-shoot of an annual football competition.
At least twelve people were said to be badly injured, including one minor.
Firefighter Commander Alfonso Panizo said the injured were taken to local hospitals.
"Up to now, we have taken 27 injured people to the Vitarte Hospital, 3 to the Montefiori Clinic, 27 to Bravo Chico Hospital. Up to now, we have 12 people who have grave injuries, among them a 12-year-old minor who was transferred (to the hospital) by firefighters," he told reporters from the back of an ambulance.
Officials believe the bleachers collapsed because of over-crowding.
The audience was primarily composed of relatives of the children who had come to watch the young teams play and celebrate new talent. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
