- Story Text: A five-storey building collapsed in Dhaka on Wednesday (June 2), flattening several adjacent homes and killing at least 14 people. Dozens more people are trapped under the rubble, police and witnesses said.
At least 50 people were hurt inside the collapsed building, which police said was badly constructed. Rescue teams sifted through the rubble for bodies and survivors.
Nearly all the building's tenants escaped unharmed as it started to tilt to one side. Most of the casualties came from the 200 or so homes surrounding the structure, witnesses said.
Taslima Begum said she was with her family, when the building fell on top of her home.
"All of our family members were just talking inside our home and suddenly the building just collapsed and fell onto our home. I somehow could get out of the house, but others could not. Five members of our family died inside the house."
Mofazzal Hossain said some of his family members also died in the collapse.
"My house was just beside the collapsed building. Five members of my family died. I found four bodies, but one is still missing. The whole building fell on our house, "said Hossain.
Police fear the death toll could rise to about 100. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
