- Story Text: A covered market in Eastern Moscow collapsed on Thursday morning (February 23), apparently under the weight of snow piled on its roof, and emergency services said at least 13 person had been killed and 18 injured.
Emergency workers said at least ten people were still trapped underneath te rubble of the collapsed market in the Baumansky district of Moscow.
The Emergencies Ministry, quoted by news agencies, said the accident occurred at 5.45 a.m. (0245 GMT) as Moscow prepared to celebrate a national holiday marking Defenders of the Motherland day.
Russian news agencies said the main market building came crashing down across an area of 2,000 square metres (21,530 sq ft). Moscow prosecutor Anatoli Zuyev said criminal investiagtion into the reasons of the collapse had been started. "There is no doubt that questionS are raised about the reasons of the collapse, the first one is that the rules for the exploitation of the building were broken. The second version could be that the people responsible for the technical inspections did not fullfill their job properly.
