- Story Text: The roof of a supermarket in southern Germany collapsed on Tuesday (February 7, 2006), but caused no injuries, a local government official said.
The 20 by 40 metre flat roof of the Netto Sued supermarket gave way at around 11 a.m. (1000 GMT) in Toeging am Inn, east of Munich, amid heavy snow, police and other officials said. "There are no injured," Klaus Zielinski, an official from nearby Altoetting said, adding that an initial rescue effort had been called off.
Earlier, a German Red Cross official had said 12 people with minor injuries had been rescued, but police and other officials said the roof had collapsed gradually and that everyone had escaped unharmed.
The collapse came one month after the roof of an ice rink fell in in Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria during a heavy snow storm, killing 15 people, including 12 children. Bad Reichenhall is about 70 km (45 miles) from Toeging am Inn. Traunstein police spokesman Franz Sommerauer said the cause of the latest collapse had not been established. "We can't say anything so far. But obviously, there was not that much snow on the roof. So it's totally impossible right now to say what caused the collapse," he said. "Edeka" supermarkets, which owns the "Netto" chain in Toeging, said the company was checking the roofs on its other buildings. "This morning we gave order to immediately check five supermarkets of the same construction type and to investigate their status. That was the most immediate consequence, " spokeswoman Marlies Kalthoff said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
