- Story Text: Rescue teams searched for survivors of a residential building collapse caused by what is initially believed to be a gas explosion in central Katowice on Thursday (October 23).
Five people were hospitalised with one of the injured in critical condition, doctors said.
Witnesses say the explosion of a historic townhouse happened around 5:00 (03:00 gmt).
"I was observing it from my window. (I saw) Plenty of smoke, fire, ambulances, fire brigades and when after half an hour as I was going to work the rubble reached the second floor," said a man living close to the site of the explosion, Ryszard Poludniak.
Fire-fighters continued to search the rubble for survivors, saying they could not get in touch with 3 tenants of the building.
"We have information that the three persons, which we have got no contact with, could be still inside. According to our procedures we are searching through the rubble using search dogs, among others," Senior Brigadier Jeremi Szczylgowski, said.
