- Story Text: A building in downtown Rio de Janeiro has collapsed
trapping an undetermined amount of occupants.
An old building, at least five stories high, collapsed
on Wednesday (September 25) in the dilapidated, crowded center
of Rio de Janeiro, burying some people under the rubble and
injuring passersby.
More than 100 rescue workers were picking through the
rubble.
Rescue personnel were not sure how many people had been in
the building, which served as a hotel and had a restaurant
that was being refurbished, when it collapsed.
"We knew that there was a restaurant that was partially in
use and that a part of it was being worked on," said Jack
Cheri, president of the Regional Council on Engineering and
Architecture.
At least two passersby were taken to hospital.
Firefighters brought an excavator and ambulances to the
scene, while police tried to keep hundreds of onlookers at
bay.
Witnesses said police had been trying to evacuate people
from the building after receiving a warning earlier in the day
that it might collapse.
