- Story Text: At least six people killed and 16 others injured
after building collapses in Azerbaijan.
At least six people died and 16 were injured on
Thursday (January 29) when part of a five-storey apartment
block collapsed in southern Azerbaijan.
Rescuers were searching on Friday (January 30) for
anyone trapped under the rubble of the building in
Lenkoran, which is 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of
Baku, the capital of the former Soviet republic.
Independent television channel ATV said 90 people lived
in the building, but it was not clear how many of them were
unaccounted for. The cause of the collapse is not yet
known, but local residents said the building was thirty
years old and unsafe, with visible cracks in the walls and
damaged foundations.
The local authorities had recently declared that the
building was safe and recently started cosmetic renovation
of the facade.
