- Story Text: A stockroom of a pharmaceutical company in southern
Karachi has collapsed, killing all three people inside the
building.
The two storey building in the eastern part of port
city of Karachi collapsed on Thursday (December 19, 2002), killing
two men and one woman. Police and rescue workers combed the
debris, but no survivors were found.
The explosion was so intense that it destroyed the entire
building and also damaged neighbouring houses.
Eyewitness Mohammad Aqil Kapraywala said that he heard a
blast just before the building collapsed.
"Around 9.30 (0430 GMT) in the morning a huge bang was
heard after which this building collapsed damaging the
neighbouring house as well. It was so intense that a Suzuki
van inside the building came flying out of the building onto
the road and a body of a woman who was inside the building
fell into the neighbouring house. Bodies of two men and a
woman were taken out," he said.
City Police Chief, Tariq Jamil said that the actual blast
occurred in the house situated at the back of the building. He
said that the cause of the collapse had not yet been
determined.
"These were two small houses, 80 square yards houses. The
one at the rear belongs to a person who owns a pharmaceutical
company. He had stored some raw material used in the
pharmaceutical company, bags are still lying there. But the
actual explosion had taken place in the other house which is
at the rear. Unless we remove the debris it is difficult to
tell the cause of explosion. Bomb disposal experts are
reaching here and as the debris is removed, they will be able
to say with some authority as to what is the cause of the
explosion," said Jamil.
