- Story Text: A NEW DEVICE DESIGNED TO STOP THE SPREAD OF OIL POLLUTION HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED IN HOLLAND.
AS THE DEVICE, AN OIL BOOM, WAS BEING TESTED THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF IL POURED FROM A SWEDISH TANKER INVOLVED IN A COLLISION WITH A DUTCH SHIP NEAR STOCKHOLM ON FRIDAY (MARCH 20).
THE BOOM CONSISTS OF A 23 1/2 INCH (60 CM) HIGH WALL OF RUGGED, TWO-PLY ORANGE PVC FILM. SINKERS OF SAND IN PLASTIC BAGS AND TAPERED CELLULAR PLASTIC BODIES ACT AS FLOATS AND KEEP THE BOOM UPRIGHT IN WATER. THE CELLULAR PLASTIC BODIES AND SAND BAGS ARE PLACED IN WELDED POCKETS WHICH ARE SEALED BY STAPLING.
THE DEVICE IS MANUFACTURED IN 164 FEET (50 METRES) SECTIONS, AND A NUMBER OF SECTIONS CAN BE JOINED TOGETHER -- DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE AREA TO BE PROTECTED.
THE BOOM FLOATS ABOUT 8 INCHES (20 CM) ABOVE AND 16 INCHES (40 CM) BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE WATER. SHOULD THE CURRENT OR WIND SHIFT SO THAT THE BOOK BULGES IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, A LOAD RELIEVING LINE WILL AUTOMATICALLY SLIDE UNDERNEATH AND SETTLE ON THE OTHER SIDE -- THUS ABSORBING THE FORCE.
A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN THE NEW OIL BOOM, INVENTED BY A SWEDISH DESIGNER.
THE MANUFACTURERS CLAIM THAT THE NEW OIL BOOM BAKES IT POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN A HIGH DEGREE OF OIL FIGHTING PREPAREDNESS. IT COULD BE USED TO PREVENT THE AFTER-EFFECTS OF TANKER COLLISIONS, WHEN THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF OIL HAVE POLLUTED BEACHES ON A NUMBER OF SEPARATE OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.
LAST FRIDAY, A NEW SWEDISH TANKER LOST AN ESTIMATED 13,200 GALLONS (60,00 LITRES) OF HEAVY FUEL OIL IN A COLLISION WITH A DUTCH SHIP. THE COLLISION OCCURRED IN ALMOST THE SAME SPOT THAT A TANKER LEAKED VAST QUANTITIES OF OIL LAST SPRING, SEVERELY POLLUTING SEVERAL ISLANDS IN THE VICINITY.
