- Story Text: Motor shows in the past have shown prospective buyers a host of cars and accessories that aroused their desires for speed and daring. But attitudes have changed and the highlights of the current Tokyo Motor Show are revolutionary low-pollution cars and an accessory that is designed to deter drunken driving. Several Japanese auto manufacturers are pioneering electric powered vehicles. One manufacturer has designed an electric car that is capable of five hours of continuous operation at 40 kilometers per hour (25 m.p.l.) before a recharge is necessary. The car is virtually pollution free.
Though most of the show is aimed at attracting new buyers and new drivers on Japan's already crowded streets and highways, one new device could keep some would-be dangerous drivers off the roads. It is an anti-drinker unit that sniffs the drivers breath to detect the presence of alcohol. If the driver has had one too many the device automatically cuts off the engine leaving him to wait for more sober times.
SYNOPSIS: Motor shows in the past have shown prospective buyers countless array of automobiles and accessories designed to arouse their visions of speed and daring. But the times have changed.
The highlights of the current Tokyo Motor Show are safe low-pollution electric models. The Subaru electro-wagon is capable of five hours of continuous operation at forty kilometers per hour. The key factor of the cars running ability is its battery system that partially recharged itself by generating a continuous flow of zinc and electrolyte.
In all there are seven hundred and eighty cars on display at the show in the Harumi Trade Centre including many models set for future production.
This station wagon, designed by Toyota, is set for distribution sometime in the future. The wagon equipped with rear flaps makes entrance easy for a family with their belongings and provides enough room from anything from a rocking chair to the family dog. The date of distribution has not yet been announced.
Another pollution-free electric car on display is the Nissan 216-X. The car is an experimental prototype whose features include a front bumper capable of being extended to take the impact in a head-on collision.
One ingenious safety device was designed by the Honda Company. It's an anti-drinker unit with a sniffer built into the steering wheel. Each time a driver gets in the unit checks his breath for alcoholic content. If the driver has had "one too many" the device automatically cuts off the engine leaving the driver to wait for more sober times.
