  • Story Text: Reports in Athens say a Government-appointed committee has found that environmental pollution in Greece has reached such a dangerous point that drastic measures are now necessary to solve the problem. A daily Athens newspaper, "To Vima" (The Tribune) published on its front page a report by the committee. The newspaper said the report had been drafted by professors, scientists and high-ranking civil servants in June 1971. The Government has not yet issued it officially.

    According to the newspaper, the report says industrial waste from coastal factories has destroyed the ecological system in some areas, and also poses an immediate danger to nearby populations. Areas mentioned in particular were the Bays of Phaleron, Zeas and Keratsini and the port of Athens. The report said unless action is taken, the pollution problem will worsen because of increased industrial development and the growth of tourism.

    Here in Athens and in other parts of Greece, the waste from factories is blamed for causing the worst pollution.

    The coastal industrial discharge is said to be so bad that it has already destroyed the ecological balance of some areas and poses an immediate threat to nearby populations. The report was said to have been drawn up in June 1971 by academics, scientists and civil servants. The conclusions haven't yet been released by the Greek Government.
