- Story Text: INTRO: Berlin's city centre was closed on Sunday when thousands of cyclists took part in races to demonstrate against pollution in the German capital.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Organisers of the protests on Sunday (June 8) called on cyclists to leave their cars at home and take part in several different races all over Berlin.
The aim of the races was to put pressure on Berlin's senate for a more enviromentally friendly transport policy and to propagate the bicycle as an ideal form of transport.
One man said demonstrators were enjoying the day. He said: "It's great. I was here last year and will come back again next year. It's cool to cycle along motorways without having to stop.
The only problem is the police are too slow." The highlight of the day was a race of solar and reclining bikes around Berlin's inner-city highway and ending at the Brandenburg gate.
Visitors could also visit a large ecological festival by the Brandenburg gate and admire the latest in solar- and battery operated bikes.
