- Story Text: Thousands of Libyans, men and women, gathered on Friday (September 16) in front of the shrine of Omar al-Mokhtar in Benghazi to welcome the Turkey's Prime Minister, Tayyip Recep Erdogan.
The premier was visiting the rebel stronghold for the first time since the start of the Libyan revolution.
Erdogan, along with thousands of Libyans, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the death of the leader of the Libyan resistance against the Italian occupation, Omar al-Mokhtar, surrounded by thousands of Libyans.
The people of Benghazi resurrected the shrine recently after it was decommissioned by Muammar Gaddafi in the 1980s.
Tayyip Erdogan, very much in favour with Libyans for his country's support during the revolution, declared that Turkey would continue to stand by the people of Libya.
"By the will of God; we will not leave you alone, we will not leave forever and by the God willing, we will support the Libyan people with all of our abilities," he said.
Erdogan added that the Turkish government would inaugurate a new consulate in Misrata in the near future.
Turkey has recognised the National Transitional Council as a legitimate representative of the Libyan people and it has been sending regular shipments of humanitarian since mid-February. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
