- Story Text: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Sofia on Monday (October 4) for a one-day visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Prime Minister Boiko Borisov.
The two leaders discussed the upcoming construction of a gas network interconnection between Bulgaria and Turkey that will be a vital part of the Nabucco natural gas pipeline.
The Nabucco gas bridge from Asia to Europe will connect the world's richest gas regions, the Caspian region, the Middle East and Egypt to European consumer markets. The network is backed by several European Union states and the United States and is seen as a rival to the Gazprom-led South Stream pipeline project.
Erdogan issued a commitment to the continuation of Nabucco as an "important diversification of energy resources."
"The interconnection link we are buidling with our friends at the moment will become an important part of Nabucco project later," Boiko Borisov added.
Amid the amity over the joint energy project, Borisov declared his support for Turkey's membership of the EU, a contentious issue among some other union members. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
