- Story Text: Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday (December 10) trade between Turkey and Mexico should be boosted.
While on the second day of an official visit to Mexico, Erdogan visited Mexico's Senate and mentioned trade as he addressed the full chamber.
Mexican Senate President Carlos Navarrete said Erdogan's visit would help meet with this objective.
"The Senate thinks joint support is need to increase commerce in the short term. We are sure your visit will favour the economy, culture and social approaches between our countries," he said.
Commenting on bilateral economic relations, Erdogan said trade volume between Turkey and Mexico was currently 450 million USD but added more could be done.
"Turkey is the world's 17th largest economy in the world and if extraordinary things happen we will move up into the 16th spot. Mexico is the world's 13th largest economy, we are close but there's still a lot of work to do. A trading volume of under $500 million dollars is very underneath the desired figure. Trade between Turkey and Mexico should be expressed in thousands of millions of dollars. We hope agreements reached yesterday can help," he said..
Last week, Erdogan met with President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. where he said Turkey could be a mediator to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme.
