- Story Text: Some 2,500 demonstrators mostly of Turkish origin protest against Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's Germany visit, accusing him of "oppressing minorities" and "abusing democracy."
Hours before Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday (October 31), some 2,500 demonstrators protested against his visit in Berlin, according to police.
Waving banners reading "Erdogan stands for war" and "do not abuse democracy," the demonstrators of mostly Turkish origin gathered near the German capital's landmark, the Brandenburg Gate.
One demonstrator said she wanted to support hunger strikers imprisoned in Turkey, adding that she and others had promised themselves to protest against him if Erdogan came to Germany again.
Erdogan arrived in Germany on Tuesday (October 30) to officially open his country's new embassy.
Later on Wednesday, the Turkish prime minister was to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the situation in Syria and Turkey's bid to join the European Union expected to be high on the agenda. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
