- Story Text: Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev met Palestinian president Mahomoud Abbas in Baku on Tuesday (June 28).
Abbas was given an official welcome with a guard of honour in a city centre square decorated with Palestinian and Azerbaijani flags.
Palestinian delegation members were introduced to President Ilham Aliyev, while Azerbaijan state officials met President Mahmoud Abbas.
The leaders were due to discuss Azerbaijani-Palestinian relations, highlighting political and humanitarian issues, according to reports from Azerbaijan news sources.
On Sunday (June 26) Palestinian leaders announced that they would ask the United Nations for recognition as an independent country in September this year, an action both Israel and the United States oppose.
President Abbas hopes to gain Azerbaijan's support for Palestine in the Israel-Palestine conflict, according to Azeri media reports.
Azerbaijan, which borders Iran, Armenia and Russia's volatile North Caucasus region, will carry out a joint military exercise with the United States later this year called 'Regional Response'. Azerbaijan is also an important transit country for NATO military equipment from Afghanistan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
