- Story Text: The Azeri President visited the Arc de Triomphe and the eternal flame of the Unknown Soldier on the second of his 3-day state visit to France. He also met with the French prime minister, with the two delegations signing a number of agreements. Azerbaijan's president Ilham Aliyev paid tribute to the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Tuesday (January 30), as part of his 3-day visit to France.
Upon arrival at Aliyev reviewed troops and during the ceremony laid a wreath, taking a minute of silence in front of the symbolic eternal flame.
Later on Tuesday, Aliyev held talks with Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin at Matignon. Both countries have signed a political declaration as well as agreements in culture, civil defence, tourism, sciences and aviation areas.
On Monday (January 29), Aliyev was received by the French president Jacques Chirac for talks on international issues including Iran. Talks also focused on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and bilateral relations.
At an official dinner at the Elysee Palace on Monday night, Chirac said that France and Azerbaijan should strengthen their cooperation to help Azerbaijan build a true democracy and a modern economy.
After a very successful "Baku Paris" exhibition at the Orangerie Museum in 2004, a new Azeri cultural season is now underway in France. French people will rediscover Azerbaijan, in particular its musical traditions.
Later on Tuesday, Aliyev is due to meet with Jean-Louis Debre, President of the National Assembly and have dinner with the President of the Senate Christian Poncelet.
On Wednesday (January 31) Aliyev, accompanied by his Foreign Minister Elmar Mammedyarov, Economy Minister Heydar Babayev and Emergencies Minister Kamaleddin Heydarov, is due to travel to Lille, northern France to meet with French businessmen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
