- Story Text: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev met for talks focused on the situation in the troubled Caucasus region, in Moscow on Tuesday (September 16).
"For sure we need to compare notes taking into consideration all those problems that happened in the Caucasus region after Georgia's aggression. We haven't met since the time when all the events happened there.
We did not discuss the current international situation. I think it would be good to do bearing in mind that both of our countries are interested in developing our cooperation and in stability in the Caucasus," Medvedev said.
Russia's Itar-Tass news agency cited the Russian president as saying intensive interaction between Russia and Azerbaijan would help strengthen the peace and stability in the Caucasus.
Aliyev echoed Medvedev, adding that bilateral cooperation in this regard needs to be further expanded so as to ensure peace and predictability.
"Today the situation in the region concerns us and Azerbaijan is ready to make its contribution to reduce the level of tension. We think that all problems in the region must be solved in a peaceful way, through dialogue, finding mutual interests and of course on the basis of mutual respect,"
Aliyev said.
The two presidents also discussed the issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, a territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and neighbouring Armenia.
Aliyev was in Moscow on a one-day visit, and his meeting with Medvedev was the third one this year. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
