- Story Text: The winners of the annual Eurovision Song Contest were greeted by excited fans when they landed in Baku, the capital of their native Azerbaijan in the early hours of Monday (May 16) morning.
Fans and press crowded onto the tarmac to greet 21-year-old student Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal, 30, a mother-of-two who lives in London, as they came down the plane steps. Other fans waved Azeri flags and chanted the names of the winners as police stood by.
The duo who perfom under the name Ell-Nikki, won with their romantic ballad "Running Scared",about a love-struck couple, in a final round watched by an international TV audience of more than 100 million people.
Ell-Nikki were awarded a total of 221 points in the contest on Saturday (May 14).
In second place was Italy with 189 points and Sweden came third on 185 in the 56th edition of the contest, hosted by Germany. Widely heralded pre-contest favourites Ireland, Britain and France all had disappointing results.
