- Story Text: President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, meet with Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski on an official visit to Poland on Tuesday. Aliyev said he was ready for the two nations to broaden their cooperation.
The Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev visited Poland on Tuesday (February 26) in an attempt to increase cooperation and broaden economic ties between the two countries.
Aliyev met with Polish president Lech Kaczynski and was greeted with an official ceremony in front of the presidential palace. Both presidents inspected honorary guard troops and held talks afterwards.
A joint declaration was signed, stating basic guidelines for Polish-Azerbaijani cooperation and Aliyev mentioned an increase in crude oil and gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Poland.
Azerbaijan, enjoying a huge oil boom, is one of the world's fastest growing economies, though growth is slowing.
"It is my great pleasure to visit. I am also very grateful for receiving a Polish order. I want to assure President Kaczynski that in my further work I will improve Polish-Azerbaijani cooperation, I will use all effort to broaden this cooperation and for our two nations to come closer together. Of course our relations are seen by both sides as strategic, as a strategic partnership," President Aliyev told journalists after meeting Kaczynski.
The Polish President Lech Kaczynski said Poland and Azerbaijan are strategic partners.
"Azerbaijan is Poland's strategic partner. Poland supports Azerbaijan in it's policy of approaching the euro-Atlantic structures and the European Union. Poland also fully recognises Azerbaijan's territorial integrity," Kaczynski said referring to Azerbaijan's breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, where ethnic Armenian separatists threw off Azeri rule in a war in the 1990s that killed about 35,000 people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
